Attached Garage Conversion to a Studio ADU in Palo Alto, CA
For this Palo Alto project, Design by M&M converted an attached garage into a fully functional studio accessory dwelling unit (ADU) with a complete kitchen, full bathroom, closet space, and in-unit laundry. The goal was to transform existing underused square footage into a comfortable, self-contained living space that adds flexibility and long-term value to the property.
Because the new unit was created within the existing garage footprint, the project required careful planning to make the space feel efficient, livable, and code-compliant. Every major function needed to fit into a compact layout, including the sleeping and living area, kitchen, bathroom, storage, and laundry. As a design-build project, the work involved coordinating the layout, permitting, utility planning, and construction as one managed process.
